I don't know that it is quite common I have never seen a hone like that. Without using it I couldn't say it would be good for razors or not but it is defiantly different and would be nice in a hone...

It's probably not that hard. A DMT 600 is going to take a long time for any stone. I have a DMT8C which is 325 and it takes a good while to lap a stone that has any dishing to it.

It was in bad shape when I got it and thanks to my worn out DMT i got over an hour into lapping it right now. But it cleaned up nice and was well worth it.
