    Default Confirm Hone ID Please

Hey guys I bought this stone last weekend at an antique store for $8 it was originally set in a block of wood. I bough it thinking it was a thuringian but after posting it on multiple forums some people said it looked like a CF in some photos and a thuringian in others. Here's the pics of it after i lapped it, it wasn't real hard so that's why I was steering away from a CF.
    Dry

With slurry made from a Cnat slurry stone.

Wow - that's some funky lighting you have got going on there! It looks grey, then purple, then green! What is it's true colour? Does it slurry easily? That dark inclusion - what colour is it - CFs usually have red streaks and dots, some have very dark, blackish dots with a hint of red and usually some scratchy kind of inclusion in the middle of the black area, though not always.

CFs usually take on a glassy character and are very hard and hard to raise a slurry on. It looks very regular for a CF, but I have seen regular CFs - sometimes the bottom is still a bit rough-hewn.

To be frank, the only pic that has hints of a CF in it - for me - is the middle one. I wouldn't put my money on it being a CF to be honest - more like some form of hone-slate.

    Regards,
    Neil

Yeah I know the pictures are bad. Sorry. The top one was taken outside in the shade. The bottom one was taken in a lightbox. The inclusion is where a gouge was that I didn't feel like lapping out at that particular time. It slurries pretty easily. It's true color is like an army green, this is what my wife told me I am color blind, it is nearly the same color as my small thuringian but jus a bit darker. Thanks for the help though.

    Hi Matt,

You are lucky your wife just calls you colour-blind: mine is much more insulting!

I have a small thuringian about the same colour as the bottom pic, it's a very good finisher. A thuringian is a type of slate hone-stone, so maybe that is what it is. You should try finishing a razor on it and see how you like it. Don't bother with the slurry - it should release a very fine 'slime' on its own as you finish the razor on it.

    Regards,
    Neil

I am almost positive that it is a thuringian and I did finish a razor on it with only water, it left an edge very similar to my small 6" thuringian.

I must agree here, 3 pics all look different, but if its soft, easily raise slurry, and lapped definately not a CF. My thuri is blue grey,
but when i got it the seller had pics that showed the stone in different colors like the ones you posted on here.

I think the true color of it is going to be the one showin the chipped corner.

Well in between your wife calling you color blind and Neil wife insulting him, i really think you got a wonderful stone there,
vintage thuringian are truly the most consistent stone for razors imo!!

Thank you I had to do a bunch of lapping on it because of that gouge you see the remnants of. I thought about just leaving it as it is because you can't feel it when you are honing, but I think I'll lap it out eventually to make it a nice and uniform surface. Thank for your help guys I will enjoy this stone.

Yes that will take a while but better then if it was a CF that would take 6 days to lap that out on a CF!!
