Here's some ideas for sourcing parts. You could look into scavenging parts from heat sources (ie space heaters/hot plates). Some of the simpler ones just convert DC current to a wire/rod to heat it...

Makes me think of some heat treated aluminum sheets... Might not be as expensive, and if done right can be purdy darn tough...
