You would be hard pressed to tell the difference...
You would be hard pressed to tell the difference between Kauri, swamp Kauri and ancient Kauri.
Ancient Kauri might be a little darker maybe. Ancient Kauri is carbon dated from reliable sources.

It is quite soft, but very nice timber to work...
It is quite soft, but very nice timber to work with. Kauri was used a lot in boat building.
Looks quite nice turned, would make a nice brush handle. -

The ivory disks are different sizes, so you know...
The ivory disks are different sizes, so you know what way they curl. The lignum vitae are hard to come by now, they are collectable in their own right.
