The bevel isn't set until it is sharp enough to "pop" or cut hair very easily. If your close you could add a layer of tape to create a secondary bevel.

Simple don't worry about an even bevel. :p At least on your first. The only thing you should worry about is getting the bevel set. From there it gets easier.
