the smal stripes are made to add grip. polished aluminum gets extreamly slippery if soaps get on the handle.
so without any stripes or ruffed grip area it would be like holding a wet banana. :D

ah. i cut the copper rod in a metalsaw that cuts slow with water running on the blade.
in the lathe i only do the flatning and cutting the design. when i lathe both copper and aluminum i use 95%...
