I saw the video by Charlie and it seems to stop the issues related to over heating the blade. So presumably you could heat the tip which would allow you to close the hole without damaging the blade....

If you have the tip still you could make a pile of filings for the epoxy from the same razor. Pity you can't peen or squeeze the tip shut.

Those scales are probably from the early 1800s so they have had a long life already and probably little attention so that is likley why such a dramatic change. New or younger scales might not react...
