Hirlau, I will almost guarantee that there will be almost no consensus on the best or worst material, well except for something like 60g sandpaper :) but even then someone will probably say the back...

I use a strop made from stretch denim, the stretch material was bought in error but it does work well, the inside is smoother than the outside, so I just use the inside.
