Are you referring to using newspaper as a stropping material? I have heard of this being used. Supposedly the ink is very slightly abrasive. Kinda like bare leather.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

In a pinch, it can be used in lieu of a strop, so can a leather belt, or a seat belt, even your palm.

From what I read some where the ink is carbon and acts as a very mild abrasive like super fine paste. Newspaper can also be used to make practice strops before going to leather so you have less chance to ruin your strop

Paper itself is abrasive. That's why they tell you not to use paper towels or tissues to clean your eyeglasses - they can scratch the lenses.

Newspaper (the paper as well as the printed colors) also contains metalls and other hard materials that can damage a fine edge. There are much better materials for stropping and finishing!

Blue Jean Denim makes a very good deburring strop. If I sharpen a knife on stones for example, I can always get it just a little bit sharper with a few strokes per side on denim.

I use a strop made from stretch denim, the stretch material was bought in error but it does work well, the inside is smoother than the outside, so I just use the inside.

Not as well as a leather strop or countless other materials.

Use the "Advanced Search" button ,,,,upper right,,, put in the key words box "stropping materials" for a list of threads where this very topic will be discussed along with other types of stropping material.

Hirlau, I will almost guarantee that there will be almost no consensus on the best or worst material, well except for something like 60g sandpaper but even then someone will probably say the back of the sheet would work
