Actually there are many possibilities around which do go from classical natural sealing with shellac or Urushi Laquer (mostly done on Jnats)...i prefer synthethic clear coating.

Especially on slates there is a easy procedure to check if a Sealing might be useful...make the area where you want to check the condition wet...then directly dry it with a towel...
