From what I understand, the carbon content is right on the steel, just that it isn't being properly hardened and annealed.

What I might do is get one, as an experiment, and try a few tricks I've learned from gunsmiths to harden the steel a little so it'll take and hold an edge better.

They look good. I'm thinking part of the problem...
They look good. I'm thinking part of the problem is the steel is too soft. If so, a little hardening and tempering should fix it, provided it doesn't warp the blade.
