Here are some bone scales I made for a Wad & Butcher. I got them as thin as ivory & they don't bend. You should be able to sand them more.

That looks like bone to me! I agree with Richard....
That looks like bone to me! I agree with Richard. Put a couple layers of masking tape around the pin & filled the head off. It should come apart.
