I was surprised that the residue came off as...
I was surprised that the residue came off as easily as it did. I am unsure what it was exactly...some sort of dried up oil or the like. It actually stunk while I was wiping it off.

I was thinking of putting some clear nail polish...
I was thinking of putting some clear nail polish on top of it....a little acetone would take that right off without harming the gold, but it would preserve it underneath for the time being. Thoughts?
