Default Henckels 72 w/Checkerboard Gold Wash

Picked this one up on the bay pretty inexpensively. The scales are discolored and in fairly rough shape, but the blade is nearly NOS if it wasn't before the seller honed it. I didn't care much for the hone and started from scratch and the edge came out fantastically! The gold wash as absolutely flawless and there isn't so much as a scratch on the blade anywhere. I may look to re-scale this one (or more pointedly, find someone to do so on my behalf). I will shave with it this evening, but if it is anything like my other Henckels, I have yet to meet one I didn't love!

Yes, that is a beauty. Before you give up on the scales try polishing them with the stuff for removing the haze on headlight covers. Been using this stuff http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotiv...leaner-polish/ . If you are going to trash the scales anyway you've got nothing to loose. If it works you will have an "all" original vintage Henckels Friodur.

Be very careful with any polish around gold wash, it is very fragile. That is a nice blade. If you watch carefully there are some very nice deals that come up on Henckels regularly. It is my favorite brand for a variety of reasons,

A treasure to behold! I would try some polish as mentioned above on those scales. She should give a fantastic shave as do any Henckels I've tried, they are the best German razor I've tried so far. Enjoy!

Kind of off topic, but I've used mosquito spray to remove the haze from headlights. The stuff with deet in it. Not sure about using it on scales though.

I was thinking of putting some clear nail polish on top of it....a little acetone would take that right off without harming the gold, but it would preserve it underneath for the time being. Thoughts?

A little chrome polish on the scales only yielded this result after only a few minutes! Looks like these scales will stay after all. In the auction there was a piece of tape on the back side on the scales, which I asked the seller to remove for cracks. A bit of a tan line for sure but no big deal. A little more work and this thing will be tip-top!

Scales looking good. Sometimes a little polish does wonders. Like RezDog says though keep the polish away from the gold wash at all costs.

Try some polish on that tape mark too, should come right off. That sure is a good looker! I'll bet she's a hell of a shaver too.
