You may want to look at fly tying thread, there's a thread called floss they use for tying flies that you put a reactor on, and it turns rock hard, and smooth. Some really cool stuff!!

My thought was to clamp it, and wrap with a thread around the knurled area, then coating the thread with something (epoxy, CA). Like the eyes on a fishing pole. Or go primitive and use sinew.
