There's definitely more complete contact on the hone now. Before I had to do a very pronounced rolling x and even then it was very difficult to get complete contact across the entire edge.

So with the sharpie, I just run it along the cutting edge and coat the entire length with ink right?

The entire cutting edge is now sitting flat on the hone, except the very end of the toe edge.probably about a sixth the entire edge.
