Yep. I wouldn't have taken away from the toe. Trying to keep the same width (as much as possible) across the entire blade is what is normal. When not much blade is left it's hard to correct the heal....

I'm with Mike. Wrap it in many layers of duct tape and trash it. It's beyond worth the effort. 35 to 45 bucks on ebay will get you something worth working on. Sorry to be blunt.
