I usually wipe the edge before I start as part of my assessment too... Fibers will catch sometimes on very tiny micro-chips and stay there like a flag saying "Hey Dude ya missed...

Just a little hint here

If you just use a simple Terrycloth Towel etc: you might find that the fibers that catch can also sometimes be a clue to issues in the edge :)
