I just prefer smiling blades, and it's a test that I do to make sure the blade is just smiling, not warped.

If you look down the length of the blade, from toe to heel, you should not be able to detect any side-to-side warping.

The CD thing works, but if the blade has a smile/frown it will be misleading...
