The first blade is shaving very well right now, it is only finished to 50 grit, and has some definite room for improvement, but it shaves great.
Planning on shipping it out to a member or two to see...

I thought about a mosaic pin in the shank or blade, probably saw a picture if yours butch...
But in this one, I don't have a fix...
It is just about shave ready and I'll see how it feels

I used a grinder for the shaping and initial honing
I used a 4X36 belt sander to grind through the razor... It is a wood sander, but it obviously can eat away at metal...

Took the first blade back to the grinder and removed a lot more steel to bring the bevel down thinner...
It took a long time to get it honed, the steel is very hard...

yes, generally harder steel will hold it's edge longer, but if it kills your hone and takes 7 days to hone, it needs another temper cycle...
I did the edge temper on mine so as I use it and hone it...

Took my torch and very carefully drew a light gold temper on the edge...
The edge was wearing down my hones...
Looks like it's taking to the hones a bit better now.
Going to do asecond temper on...

Hollow grinding has been the most difficult part, and I don't imagine doing it on a bader is any less difficult than a bench grinder ... If there is any area I'm not satisfied with, that is it...

I tempered the scrap of O-1, at 400 for 1 hour, and tried to break it again today...
Pre temper it was very hard, but brittle...
After the temper, I put it in my vice, and tried everything I could...

Nelsonite is a wood stabilizer, by impregnating the scales with it I discourage warping and other wood related problems from developing down the road ...

Introducing a vaccum pulls the stabilizer...

I took a block of olive wood with a nice grain, cut strips from it using my bandsaw, and sanded them flat...
I glued them together, cut out my pattern, and drilled holes...

I'm not sure I'll be able to break it, I had to pull pretty hard on the piece I did to get it to break, but when it did, it snapped like glass...

Just for the sake of curiosity, I took a scrap of the left over O-1 I had, did a quick HT on it and then broke it in my vice.

I'm sure the time involved would be reduced significantly with better equipment, and it would probably be cleaner work... But so far so good.

I've been using a bench grinder with a wet paper towel to profile... I just didn't keep the tip cool enough, when it gets thin is when you really have tobecareful
I'm keeping a bucket of ice water...

Razor makers don't make mistakes...
They just make smaller razors.

while profiling down my second razor I overheated the tip
it only took a second.
So I removed the pretty...

I'm going to have to try to sell one of these to justify the time I'm putting in to them with SWMBO, so I'm planning on making the scales on both out ofthe same material.

It just makes it easier...

Blade #1 polished nice and shiny, blade #2 in process...
I've had really good luck using a wet piece of papertowel to keep the heat down while grinding...
