Yes, that's wrong and yes you screwed (slightly) your razor. The purpose of the spine is to lay on the hone so that the spine and the edge touch the hone. THAT is how the proper angle of the edge...

When you say a 20 degree angle, do mean you held the blade off the hone at a 20 degree angle?
