It really depends on the initial condition of the edge when starting honing. The 1000 grit is for old oxidized edges or small nicks in the edge.
That and your level of patience.:)

I have been looking for an effective 1000 grit hone that is as fast as 1000 grit sandpaper. So far, no luck. The diamond hones are simply to harsh on the edge, been there, done that.
