    I would suspect that most of the difficulty is...

    I would suspect that most of the difficulty is due to the very wide bevels. That is a lot of steel to remove using fine grit razor hones.

    FWIW...The blade is to wide for the thickness of the spine. The general rule of thumb is the blade width should be 3.5 x the thickness of the spine. This gives a nice narrow bevel. Yours is in excess...
