To each his own but I leave original scales as is...
To each his own but I leave original scales as is if they are only chipped and the pivot is good. Even if the other end has a stable crack. I have a thing about original scales on old Sheffields....

If it doesn't have 'England' stamped on the tang,...
If it doesn't have 'England' stamped on the tang, only Sheffield it is before 1881 IIRC when a treaty came into effect requiring country of origin stamps on cutlery. I would bet 1850s but I don't...
