A lot of old time barbers would mute the very point. I've been tempted on some of mine but can't bring myself to do it. Instead I'm careful but every once in awhile I pay the piper. :)

Because the slight extension of the point and the fact that it is relatively squared off allows you to reach in to nooks and crannies that you couldn't do with a round point. At least not easily. IMO...
