    Some guys do a progression and you certainly can. I never have unless it was 120 to 325. I don't go above 325. Early on I lapped some with a 1200 plate but found out using the 1200 to lap waterstones...

    You should lap any new stone IMO. If you have a diamond plate (325) that is ideal. Alternatively wet & dry sandpaper on a flat surface will do. See hone lapping 101 in the SPR Wiki here.
