I am now using a flat granite plate I got on sale from Woodcraft. It's awesome for using with lapping films! It is certified flat to below 2 microns across the entire surface!

I don't use the self-adhesive lapping sheets, just the plain, no stickum kind.
Wet out the sheet of glass, lay down your lapping sheet, work out the excess water and air bubbles and the film...
