No water so no solvent on the stone. No particles of stone floating in the mix = finer effect.
Also convenient, as mentioned a la barber hone as some could be used wet or dry.

I was one one of the 'lucky' ones that had to lap plenty as my hone was warped. I only bothered to lap one side.

Sometimes when the shave test's not quite right, 5 strokes dry on the 20k, a la barber hone may turn the tide.
