You could try Birchwood Casey Rust & Blue Remover. It will not remove the rust only change it from red to black so less reactive. Don't get any on the blade. It wiil stain.

Hard to advise without pics but if yo go to the little google cutom search window at top right of page & type in rust on goldwash. You'll see heaps of answers.
