Chris,
the ivory micarta I get or use is paper based. It's extremely uniform (as to no texture at all), cut and sand somewhat faster and easier compared to linen or canvas and is easier to buff.

very uniform. the only pattern would be if you carved or filed anything on it. It's pretty easy to cut and sand.
