The Timber needs to be towards the outside of the boards, it will stop the wind catching the sheets and bending them back. Obviously tie or strap the whole shabang down.
Oh my goodness you do get your time frames mixed up. I used to surf ten THOUSAND years ago!! However, I do have roof racks. Not a bad idea re cutting them down. However, first I'll see if I can get the larger sheets delivered, I'd rather larger sheets so there is less joins.
