Leave it to Southerners to butcher the native tongue. Many would say this is true in the States as well. If you ask me, the northerners are the ones who talk funny in the States. Midwesterners are fairly accent neutral and speak a fairly generic (if there is such a thing) American English. IMHO New Yorkers, Jerseyites and people from Massachussets (who refer to themselves as Massholes and apparently have banished the letter "R" from the alphabet) are the worst offenders (no offense to anyone of course.)

However, when I visited the UK, the locals got a kick out of my accent. I didn't know I had one. Apparently to them I sounded like Andy Griffith (totally the wrong dialect of Southern English for me) but there are certain similarities I suppose. Even though I poked a bit of fun at the Queen's English I've always admired British English. It has always struck me as very precise and formal. By comparison even good American English sounds a bit muddy. The Cockney accent notwithstanding. Why do I suddenly feel like 'Enry Iggins?

    Very true!

I can think of no one more murderous to the English (American English) language than New Yawkers!

Strange, I've had several friends from upstate NY and none of them seemed to beat up the language as horribly as folks from New York City. In fact most New Yorkers from anywhere except the area around NYC sound almost midwestern. I work with a lady from Long Guyland who has lived in Flahrida (3 syllables) for thirty years and still has a thick, thick accent.
