Ok - get old and fat like me and you will have plenty of skin to grab.
Actuually try grabbing skin by sideburns and pull up. Good luck.

I noticed last shave my Clauss 5/8 round point was starting to pull a bit. Drat. Out comes my pasted strop: 3" wide, 24" long, a piece of electrical tape smack in the middle to separate it into two distinct halves. One side has Hand American 1.8 micron boron carbide, the other has Hand American 0.5 micron chromium oxide. I just go by feel & sound... probably 25 round trips on the 1.8, then 50 on the 0.5, then 50 on the plain leather. I decided to polish my other two primary razors at the same time, a 5/8 JR Torrey and a 5/8 Dubl Duck Special #1. The Duck sounded like it needed a little TLC, but the Torrey sounded like it was ready to roll.

Started with a soak in the hot tub tonight. The wife has a big test tomorrow, and the bathroom is hard to schedule on test days. Besides, I needed a nice long soak. Work was a real nasty one today -- people deciding to implement processes that will yield no tangible results other than more paperwork. Sigh.

Once finished, I soaked my brush in a mug of hot water and began warming a couple of towels in the sink. I'm one of those guys who keeps the hot water heater just shy of thermonuclear

I began making lather with some Vulfix Sandlewood cream. I painted it on, then said to myself, "Wait a minute." With the lather sitting on my face, I stropped up my nemesis: a 6/8+ Henckles Friodur I bought from Lynn that has to draw blood everytime I shave with it. I swear the blade must be possessed. 15 round trips on the linen, 25 on the plain leather.

I wiped the cream from my face with another hot towel, and applied some eShave pre-shave oil from last Christmas -- really need to get the wife something nice this year, since she bought a ton of shaving stuff for me last year. I typically don't use pre-shave oils, but what the hell. I relathered with the Vulfix, and made the 1st pass with the grain. Hot towels to wipe the remnants of cream from my face, and another to sit there for a bit. Relather, and then the against the grain pass. Hmmm... who says you have to use the same razor all the way through, right? I grabbed the Clauss, the start of my evening to check my results. More cutting than pulling, much better.

Finish with Pinaud Clubman, followed a few minutes later by some eShave post-shave conditioner (Clinique's Moisture Surge is way better, but don't tell the wife I borrowed some!).

I pull down at the base of the neck, shaving upward. I then grab over the ear, like the traditional first pass, and finish shaving up the cheek.

I've played with stretching in front of the razor and behind the razor, and they seem to provide different results. Stretching in front of the razor is a bit dangerous if you slip, but it seems to make the hairs a little more available for the blade to catch.

I think part of the problem is all of my razors except this one are 5/8. I put the Friodur on the wife's little kitchen scale, and it is fully double the weight of any of my 5/8 razors. I think this is what's causing me grief.

If you want to trade it for a lighter 5/8 W&B let me know!
