Cool Harley Davidson 1930 Model D

No, the 1930 Model D had a coil ignition system as opposed to a magneto ignition system and there is a difference. The magneto ignition system is simply rotating magnets producing electro-magnetic electricity or AC. Earlier HD models like the Model J of 1911 were equipped with a magneto ignition system and the bike had no battery, lighting was accomplished by a system of lamps powered by acetylene gas (by the way lighting in this model was optional) The coil system requires a battery to give a spark as opposed to the magneto system that requires no battery. See diagram of coil system and picture of 1930 model D console showing amp meter and ignition key to open electrical current.
