Its a habit I acquired during my DE shaving days.
I douse my face with cold water after shaving, then rub the alum block over the shaved portion of my face. I find that it, just as Dr. Ralfson noted, "closes the pores, calms irritation, reduces rash and stops any weepers." I find that the cold water splash prior to applying the alum reduces the sting considerably. I follow it up with some ASB and some aftershave or cologne.
