Got three razors from Joe and had to try them out. Was pretty sure they'd get here today so I skipped my shave this morning and waited until this evening. I was right.

    Hot shower, etc.
Truefitt & Hill 1805 (I definitely like the trumper's lime better)
Genco 5/8 spike point (30 trips on a Tony "the pimp" 4-sided paddle strop)
L'Occitane cade aftershave (last of my free samples)
    Royall Lyme

Nice shave. Still having a problem with the E-W pass on the neck but that will come with more practice I'm sure. Joe did a hell of a job honing this baby, I just pointed it at my face and the whiskers jumped off and ran away shrieking.

I'm not getting as glassy smooth of a shave with the regular str8's as I did with the feather but I'm also not running a pint low on the ol' blood supply all the time either. I think it's a fair tradeoff.

    Shower
    Trumpers coconut cream
    World master sheffield
    T&H1805 as balm
    feel like a million bucks.

One of the best shaves I've had with that blade (just rehoned it) and the baml is nice eventhough the scent it kindof odd.

    Wednesday night:

    Wostenholm 6/8 spike point
    Simpsons Special brush
    T&H Trafalgar shaving cream
    Proraso pre/post
    JASON Witch Vera

I ran that razor over the 0.50-micron side of my Heirloom Combination paddle about 25 roundtrips and about 50 roundtrips on the Latigo strop. Let's just say it was the most effortless straight shave to date. The edge just whipped through the stubble. Fantastic stuff.

    Default Thursday

5 min lukewarm shower and, because I know better, 5 min hot water splash to the face
5/8 Bresduck Dubl Duck Special No. 1
The Well Shaved Gentleman's Red Latigo Paddle Strop - 50 passes
    Lush Ambrosia Shaving Cream
1 trimming pass against the grain
Thayer's Witch Hazel Skin Atringent w. Aloe

I think this razor will be ok after I shape the edge a little more.

    Hot Shower

    5/8 Boker RI
    Vulfix 374 silvertip
    TM strop
    Williams Mug soap
    Old Spice

I know that Williams ain't glamorious, but I'm
sure there is probably a good chance that my
great grandfather used this same soap
back in 1906. If it was good enough for
JM Bias, then it's good enough for me.

Default Be Careful, This Is A Long One!

Last night, I had a long honing session, involving several razors. As has been said, though; the only way to really know is to shave with them. I'll start off with a list and description of the razors, because all these are real beauties. Please forgive my long-winded exuberance.

    The test razors:
    1. 6/8 near-mint Bengall round point. I don't know if garythepenman (that's who I got it from) restored this one or not...if he did, he did a helluva job. It looks like new. I've been working on honing this one for quite a while. It's HARD. I think I finally got it right.
    2. 5/8 Bengall spike point. I would call this one near-mint as well, except for one small stain at the front of the blade. I made new, custom scales for it out of leopardwood.
    3. 6/8 Challenge spike. Did a lot of resto work on it, but it turned out really nice. Nearly zero hone wear, just had to remove a bit of pitting. Really looked unused when I got it.
    4. 11/16 "Puritan", square point with a slight smile. Blue tang, spine, and stabilizers. I had to touch up the bluing on the spine and stabilizers, and I made new cocobolo 3-pin scales for this one. Turned out stunning. Light hone wear on it.
    5. 5/8 Lakeside square point. Absolutely pristine condition. Original everything, and looked like it had never touched a hone before. Didn't even have an edge bevel on it!
    6. Last, but certainly not least, a mint condition F.W. Engels. 1 1/16" monster. .262" thick at the spine (that's more than a quarter inch) May have been sharpened once before, by someone who knew how.

    The Prep:
50 passes each on a strop. The first 3 razors were done on my latigo strop, the second 3 were done on my cordovan strop.
    Hot shower
    Proraso cream
C&E Best Badger Edwin Jagger Brush
    Hot towels x 2
    More Proraso
(This is my standardized test setup, btw. I use it everytime I test a razor(s), so I can compare results with previous shaves)

Every single one of these shaved very close and smooth. The Puritan pulled a very slight amount, but 5 passes on the coticule smoothed it right up. It took 5 passes on the 8k Norton and 10 on the coticule for the Challenge. The Bengalls glided, as did the Lakeside and the Engels. The Engels is phenomenal, if you can maneuver that 17/16 blade around your face. I had let my beard grow for a couple days, so I'd have a good, tough test bed for this bunch of razors. I didn't actually not shave for that reason, but it worked out anyway.

Followed it up with a scalding hot rinse of the blades, followed by a soft towel drying, followed by air drying.
Finished up the face with a warm/cold water rinse, and some Thayer's "Extra Cool" Witch Hazel (with aloe) AS. This is the one with a bit of grain alcohol in it (for the burn). Best stuff I've found. Haven't used anything else since I got it last week.

Similarly I have been honing up 2 Dubl Duck Specials their test was today.

    hot shower w. Spectro Jel
The Gentleman's Quarter 4-B test cream
The Well Shaved Gentleman's Red Latigo Paddle Strop - 50 passes

5/8 Bresduck Dubl Duck Special No. 1 - didn't have the gumption
5/8 Pearlduck Dubl Duck Special No. 1 - couldn't cut the mustard either
5/8 Bresnick Dubl Duck Special No. 1 - resorted to the stand by
    1 pass with/across the grain - relather
    1 pass against the grain
    touch up with water
Thayer's Witch Hazel Skin Atringent w. Aloe

Face feeling a bit rough from the bad blades, but nothing terrible. Just goes to show that shaving IS the test. All three razors were popping hairs well, but not all were shaving well.

Threw a bunch of new stuff in the mix today.

    Shower/etc
Colleen's Lemon T & Verbena soap (worked in the moss scuttle)
Geneva 6/8 round point honed by Joe
(30 passes on a pimpmeister paddle)
    Arizona goat milk aftershave

Kind of truncated my shaving ritual today, trying a new razor, new soap, new a/s etc. The Geneva is smooth and sharp (Joe does a heck of a job honing) but this is a little bit bigger than my normal 5/8 and I was a little bit unsteady (hey, I'm a total noob still). Consequently I wasn't totally satisfied with my followup passes but that's my poor technique, not anything else.
