Thanked: 1185Bill,
Lots of y'all were without power the last I heard. Did they finally get that fixed? Ungodly heat for sure but no power normally equals no cold beer which totally takes the suck factor completely off the charts. I'm reminded of my days in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. No Sir, not much fun at all.

We were lucky. We never lost power hear. That said, they are sti working to restore the last areas. The day after the storm, when I was on my way to work, the humidity was at 90% and the heat index hit 115. I felt like I was back in Iraq where I experienced 130 F temps. The difference, as you pointed out, is that I could get cold beer here!

Thanked: 1185Don't know that I've ever heard an Aussie say a good word about Foster's. Sounds like it is the Australian equivalent of us exporting Old Milwaukee or Blatz (both widely considered to be um...not so great beers here.) Amongst Americans Fosters is at least a decent beer. I prefer to drink it in extremely hot weather (it's light and smooth enough to chug thus providing quick refreshment.)
I'm reminded of 1981 my squadron at Mountain Home AFB, ID. played host to No. 1 Squadron of the RAAF (they flew F-111's out of Amberley(?) at the time). Their consumption of Coors was nearly heroic (again, a much lighter beer than they were probably accustomed to drinking.) The Aussies absolutely put on a beer drinking clinic. Kicked our butts at cricket as well (no huge challenge there)Last edited by 1OldGI; 07-08-2012 at 01:09 AM.

Thanked: 88Lots of shaving and good times:
I shaved with my new Concord today, and it was a DFS shave:
Razor: Concord DE
Blade: SuperMax
Prep: Bald Frog Eucalyptus Balm
Brush: Whipped Dog black badger
Soap: CO Bigelow
A/S: Joop Homme
My 15-year-old son wanted his hair buzzed, so I did that with the electric clippers. He then decided he wanted his head shaved, as he often does this time of year with (American) football practice starting up again (he plays varsity for his high school). I told him I'd do it with the DE, but he wanted me to try a straight, so I got out two 6/8 round nose straights and got to work. I've never shaved anyone else before, but it went very well:
Razors: 6/8 John Clarke and Son, 6/8 GD 66
Prep: Bald Frog Eucalyptus Balm
Brush: Whipped Dog black badger
Soap: CO Bigelow
A/S: Nivea for Men Balm
I did a two-pass shave and was blood free until the end, when I made a tiny slice. He about jumped out of his skin when I applied the styptic pencil.
Spanky:
Afterwards, it was family relaxation and good food:

Thanked: 485I tend to like European beers these days, Peroni, Stella Artois, Oettinger, Hollandia. As far as local beers I like Cooper's Sparkling Ale or Pale Ale. The sparkling ale is 5.8%. I generally like a bitter beer at around 4.8%. I looked up up Coors Original and it's listed as 5%; which is reasonably high, I'd say, for Australians, generally. I love the way an F-111 sneaks up on you, you don't hear it until it's right over head, and when they come up really low they scare the shit out of you. I used to be in Air Defence. Best experience with aircraft, though, was in Darwin (Northern Territory) on a really warm humid night, stationed on the side of a runway. We were doing a joint exercise with with the USA, and they had some B52s coming in. I went and lay right on the edge of the runway on my back and watched them land. It was really cool...
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 1185Small nick on the dome for a roast pig? I'd take that deal all day long!
F-111 night afterburner take-off is really cool too. I've seen a few really impressive low level, high speed, wings fully swept passes. Amazing they can be that quiet until they're right over the top of you, then the noise is so intense you'd swear the world is coming to an end. My last operational unit was a B-1 squadron (basically a big huge F-111.)Last edited by 1OldGI; 07-08-2012 at 01:36 AM.

Thanked: 88He might have, I was too busy laughing. I warned him that it would burn.
This country western thing is a phase, hopefully. Although we were later at a pig roast in the bottom of a barn, so take that as you will...Last edited by DFriedl; 07-08-2012 at 03:13 AM.
