Tuesday

No shave today; up early to take Bailey to hospital for an X Ray and a visit with the bone surgeon. The X Ray showed that the bone (his fibula) has still not joined to the humerus 9 months after first the operation. I asked what Plan B was; asking if they’d try with his other fibula. The answer was that Plan B is ‘wait’. It seems Plan ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ are all ‘wait’.

Did you know they can use dead people’s bones? Kept in a fridge for months, apparently. Who’d have thought.

Bailey will need arm lengthening procedures later. You know they just cut through the bone and space it apart and the two ends just grow towards each other. Amazing stuff. Bailey wasn’t all that fussed about the whole scenario, though he did say ‘Those bitches be crazy’ to the nurses taking the x Ray; he’s listening to way too much rap music at the moment. A very resilient boy for almost five, he makes me, his grandfather, feel like a wimpy wooster.

Just wanted to share what I think is interesting stuff, and also to thank those that supported me when Bailey was having his chemo; this time a year ago we were in the thick of it; I remember dry reaching with fear and worry and distress. Even though we’ve still a bit to go, it’s certainly a brighter time…It's nice to be able to be here in this little green spot on earth, surrounded by busy, busy spring without too many woes to think about.

I hope your woes are minimal and your joys are many, I hope you receive love and can give love.
(this poem of mine is a good one for spring too, I think)

Sitting On The Back Veranda One Evening

Sitting on the back veranda one evening
I realised I could hear
A flock of ducks landing on the pond
Splashing across the water
Their wings flapping at the air; braking
Their heads held back
Feet forward
Braced taut
And then
Gliding smoothly
As if nothing even happened
