Help, Superspeed ID
I just purchased this superspeed on eBay. Ive been through lots of old Gillette's but I've never seen one like this. When I saw it I first thought it was a Russian knockoff. Looking closer it appears to have gillette markings under the head. Looks like it has the rocket action with an unflared tip. Looks like it should clean up nicely. Anybody know what this is?

Thanked: 67That's a Gillette #58. It's one of the Rocket variants. It should be a nice, smooth shaver. I've always liked them.

thanks guys! I've owned dozens of superseeds (a couple of rockets) but I have never come across a #58 until today. Got this one as a "buy it now" as soon as I saw it. Can't wait to get it in the mail. Even more exited now that I know what it is.

Thanked: 67Yep, you got a nice one! Congrats!
It may clean up a bit, but it looks like there's some plating loss. I never cared much about that, but some people do. You can get it replated in Rhodium (the original plating metal) if you like.

I did notice the dark spots. I'm hoping that it turns out to be old built up soap scum. When I see dark areas on eBay razors I try to figure out if the color is on high or low spots. Soap scum will settle in the low spots, and plate loss is usually on high spots. Can't really be sure until the scrubbing bubbles do their thing though. I'm not really worried about it either way. I'll post a pic after I clean Ian's polish it.

Well here she is. Cleaned up very nicely. These pics are after scrubbing bubbles and one shave. It should be just about perfect after a little polishing. I was surprised to going that this one is mostly aluminum. I expected it to be about on par with other super speeds but I found that it's a pretty mild shaver. Anyway I'm very happy with it. Thanks again for the Help identifying this one.

Try a little Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish on it, should make it shine real nice.

Thanked: 67It shouldn't be made of Aluminium - all the #58's that I've had have been plated brass. Maybe they also made an Aluminium one.
Either way, you got a lovely razor. It cleaned up very nicely. I've always liked them, and I may have to go hunting for one now that you've renewed my interest in it.
