Thanked: 49Van Der Hagen Safety Razor?
Has anyone used the safety razor that comes in the VDH set? And if so how is it? My father expressed an interest in using a DE razor so I thought I would buy him the VDH kit so that he could try it to see if he really liked it. I don't want to buy it if it is too cheap to give him a good experience though. Any thoughts?

Tedh75,
I have never heard of a Van der Hagen safety razor and cannot comment on it. If I may suggest, buy your father a handsome and top quality Edwin Jagger or Muhle double edge razor plus a blade sampler and start him off on the right foot.

Thanked: 49Van der hagen sells a kit in target and I would imagine other stores that has a bowl, brush, soap and safety razor. It looks like an old flare handle, butterfly style. I had thought of an EJ as I love my DE89. But thought the VDH kit might be a good way to see if he likes it before I spend a bunch of money.

Thanked: 49Just did a little research and it doesn't come with the kit but does sell separately for $20-$25. On Amazon it gets mostly good reviews with just a couple I would call bad and one was because the guy didn't understand that it might take more than two shaves to figure out what you are doing wrong. Bad complaints were about cutting and bleeding, as well as doors not closing properly. Mild complaints weremainly wishing the handle was longer. The people that liked it seemed to love it especially for the price. It is however made in China. And the one I saw that looked like a flare handle was a different one.

Thanked: 8From what I can tell: it looks identical to the Weishi 9306 which is, generally, well regarded as a decent Gillette knockoff.
Not sure if the VdH is exactly the same or not but the Weishi is available cheap through various Amazon sources.
FWIW: I speak from other's experiences. But the Weishi is one I do want to try eventually (perhaps as a travel razor)

Tedh75,
I just bought that razor to try out from target. Now you can take my opinion with a grain of salt as this is my first de, but imo it shaved fairly well. Has nice weight, and didn't have any of the problems you mentioned about the doors closing at all. Even the blades that came with it felt smooth.
