Thread: Merkur barber pole

Well I did not see a sub forum for DE razors so posted here. So my wife came to me the other day saying her Gillete glide which is a decent off the shelf razor was out of blades and that they cost like $12+ for some refills. So I looked on TSS at the Merkur DE shavers and found her a Merkur #38 Barber Pole razor on clearance and blades for this beauty.

Hope she likes it and it shaves well as compared to a grocery store Gillete of course!

Any suggestions for her from anyone that has used these safety razors? I bought her a brush to have for herself too rather than use mine to soap up her legs. I plan on giving her a container of Poraso white to start out with since I have alot on hand and the cooling sensation of this soap a real nice feature.

Anyway..........figured a German DE would make the Gillete seem like a Ford Pinto as compared to a nice luxury car.

Not correct , Gillette will stand up to anybDE out there just need to find the right one with the right blade for her, the Gillette has not been around for this long for nothing , but some like the Merkur too, also there is a DE sub right below shaving with razors. Tc

I got my wife a Lady Gillette DE a while back. She was pretty exited when I gave it to her. She tried it a few times and gave it up. Hopefully you'll have better luck. Those cartridge razor she uses are expensive. If you're going to get her a brush you should get a big one. I'd imagine legs would take a lot of lather. I could be wrong but I think when shaving brushes were the norm women use bar soap for shaving.

This is my hobby and don't want to share it with the wife.

This way I don't have to hear her complain if she doesn't like it.
They tend to drone on and on about crap that doesn't matter.
"Yes Dear I heard you that razor didn't do it for you. But, can I hear about again later, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year? By the way could you remind me again in ten years."

Well we shall see for sure. What is the worse that could happen.............she dislikes it or it is mediocre for her. I guess a husband could do worse things for sure. Thanks for the feedback.

My daughter uses disposable and cartridge type razors. I've recently been able to get her to start using my Merkur 15C. This razor is so incredibly mild I can buff like mad with it and not get any irritation. Even dry touch ups to a missed spot are no worry.

The Merkur came and is a real nice piece for sure. Hefy and seems well built. I can see the attraction for sure to these fine pieces! Hopefully the wife will enjoy it!

Definitely much better than a Gillette and I even tried this razor out for size and wow! My wife loves it too and I even gave her a tub of Poraso white for using for her very own! Not the womanliest scents but the menthol and oats with green tea I think she likes!

The Barberpole is an excellent razor, the heaviest one I have with the longest handle. Got it not too long ago. Also just tried the Proraso white, I like it too. Should be a good combo. Astra or Shark blades work well in it.

I'm in the process of trying straight razor shaving for the first time. My regular razor is the Merkur Barberpole and I love it. I expect your wife will too. DEs do tend to be a bit less forgiving than a cartridge but the results are better. I got my wife a Gillette Lady Blue shortly after starting my move into DEs over a year ago. She was amazed and the difference from cartridges and definitely likes the closer results.
Another option if your wife is not into having to use a brush method is Stephan's shave lotion. It is a barber's product that is like a cream that you just dip your hand in and spread on your face or legs. Provides a super smooth glide and hydration is fine. When finished, you can just rub in any excess lotion left behind without needing to wash it off. If interested in trying it, you can get it at Williamsport Barber Supplies on line.
