Thanked: 4Merkur 34c
Hey all,
I just got a new merkur 34c and I really really like DE shaving compared to using a straight. For my busy lifestyle it just seems to work a lot better for me compared to a straight razor. I will still use my straight but only on weekends. I really enjoy using the merkur 34cand I seem to get an awesome shave with it. I have only tried the Astro stainless steel blades in it so far but they seem to get me a really close shave without any irratation. The only thing I wish was that the razor was more aggressive. Any suggestions for what i should look for next? Thanks in advance and thanks for all the blade suggestions.

Thanked: 3227I would go for one of the Merkur slant razors. They are not the aggressive horrors some make them out to be if you have your DE shaving technique worked out well. If you want a more aggressive razor than a slant go with the Muhle R41, Fatip OC, Gillette Slim or Fat Boy set @9 or one of the older vintage Gillette OCs. Personally I'd try the Merkur slant first before trying the others.

I went from a 34c to a 37c (slant) for head shaving. It's more aggressive & excess pressure will lead to blood but it's a closer shave & sounds like your next step.

I agree that the 37c is a logical next step. I have one and find that it shaves a dream those times I'm in a rush to get out of the house and can't use a SR. I use with either Polsilver, Feather or Astra blades. I have a Muhle r41, which is much more aggressive and find the Merkur 37c to be a great alternative -- close shave, no irritation.

I'm also a fan of the 37c. I personally think an adjustable would be a good choice for a second razor. The Merkur Progress is awesome and you can't go wrong with any of the vintage Gillette adjustables. Its nice to have an adjustable early on to really dial in what works for you.

Muhle R41 ... The most aggressive razor on the market without a doubt.

I started wet-shaving with the slant. I never found it to be the monster some claim it to be. I like it because it will clean me up with 2 with the grain passes so I get zero irritation. Another good choice for a more aggressive razor would be the Merkur Progress. Since it is adjustable, you can open it up to a really wide blade gap. If I do 3 passes with my Progress, I do WTG on 3, XTG on 2, ATG on 1, and get no irritation.

Thanked: 5Astra are good blades though I prefer Feather which are the sharpest on the market. I love my Merkur 34C as well. Feathers are Japanese blades. Nothing comes closer than Feathers. Just be careful they are really sharp and you could nick yourself if you don't prep well.
