Thanked: 0New to Safety Razors
Hello all, I am getting ready to take the plunge into safety razors. That being said I am kinda leaning to the Merkur 34C as my first razor with a 23 razor sampler pack from SRD. Does this seem like a good way to go, or is there a better beginner safety razor setup? For the near term I will be using the art of shaving oil, cream and lotion. Thank you all for your help.

DEs come in all varieties and price ranges and there are plenty of them to choose. The 34C is a good solid razor to start with. I have one. Once you get used to it you can decide if you want more aggressive or less or about the same in future razors.

Edwin Jagger DE89 is also a solid starter. I have both the 34c and 89. If I gift a razor it is one of the two.

Thanked: 31Safety razors are an excellent way to learn more about and experience traditional wet shaving. Between new razors and vintage razors there's lots of fun to work with. I prefer safety razor to straight razor but that's just personal preference. Locally safety razor shaving is on the rise, lot's of guys and gals discovering a new shaving skill and experience. I hope you find a better shave and have great fun doing so!

Thanked: 19I started with the 34C, and that's still what I use when I'm not using my straights. Just take it easy. You may have a bunch of little weepers if your face isn't used to it. Don't give up. Best value shave you will ever have, and second in closeness only to the straight. But you can get it real competitive with experience.

The 34C is a good razor. You don't need to look for another, at least for now. :P It will serve you well to learn, and truth be told, would be a fine razor, and all you really need to shave for as long as you like. But we all know RAD will kick in soon enough. Enjoy the simplicity of one good, solid razor for a while first.
Welcome to DE shaving, and SRP!Mike

As many of these gentlemen suggest, the Merkur 34C and the Edwin Jagger DE89 are excellent starter choices. The Muhle R89 is another good choice. This razor's shave head is similar to that of the Edwin Jagger, and both have impeccable fit and finish.
