Thanked: 6From two handed use of a SR to single hand DE user
Hey guys. Forgive me if these are stupid questions but here goes....
I've been using a SR for years now (thanks SRP) but just over a month ago I came off my motorcycle and dislocated 3 fingers in my left hand, plus other injuries, and have now limited movement / grip in it. Until I get physio / Occupational Therapy and get it moving fully again, I'm limited to a single hand so the SR is out of the question.
I've been using cartridges again (my face is not liking it one bit) and have just ordered my first DE (an Edwin Jagger de89lbl with Feather blades). Will use it until I can get back to the SR then use it as my travel razor in the future.
Questions....
Is it easy to use a DE with the same hand for both sides of the face (would never even attempt this with a SR!!)?
Coming from a SR, is there much difference to the technique of a DE? I know people moving to wet shaving for the first time have a steeper learning curve.
Many thanks,
Steve

Thanked: 3225Yes, easy to use only one hand to shave with when using a DE. That is how I have used a DE for over 4 decades.
Just find a good starting angle by placing the head flat on your face with the handle parallel to the floor. Then lower the handle till you just feel the blade. That should give a good starting angle. Just let the weight of the DE do the work ie no pressure.

Thanked: 634Was it your dominant hand you injured? If not you can use a straight with the one good hand as long as you can still use the other to stretch the skin.

I think you'll be fine with the DE one handed, and you may be able to use the back of side of the opposite hand to give a bit of a stretch where it is necessary. Funny thing, I began shaving with DEs 52 years ago and I don't remember if I ever stretched skin until I learned the straights. Might have, might not have, just don't recall. One way or the other, I'm sure you'll be fine. Hope you heal up good as new sooner than later.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 6Thats great news, thanks guys.
@bouschie no, it wasn't my dominant hand, luckily, but tried holding the straight in my good (dominant) hand and felt like I didn't have much control of it on the oposite side so though it wasn't worth the risk.
Yeah thanks JimmyHAD, hopefully soon.Last edited by stevieb; 08-25-2016 at 01:37 PM.

What bike was you on?
How did the crash occur?
If you don't mind sharing?
I got on my bike today only to find the front end twisted.
I was in a coffee shop having a cup of tea whilst some one hit and run my bike.

Thanked: 6A 2001 Suzuki GSX750F. I was passing someone on a single lane carriageway and was breaking to pull in again into what was plenty of space but all the cars in front of my mate who was already there from earlier decided to slow down (don't know why) so had to brake harder and the front wheel went out from under me and I tumbled down the road.
Sorry to hear that about yours. What do you have?Last edited by stevieb; 08-25-2016 at 02:45 PM.
