First Time Shaving with SR with Success at 58, a Weird Story
Hello folks, I think my story is kinda funny, I've tried first SR of my father and grandfather's coupla times when I was real young, all were horrible experiments, it was like I am holding the blade with my bare hands, several tries hurt my face a lot and I gave up.
Lurking in the internet I read Merkur Progress was a smooth shaver with exposing smaller angle than Futur, without asking anyone in the forum I've pulled the trigger and ordered a Progress 570.
It arrived hours ago, I've placed a Feather Hi-Stainless (Black plastic box) razor, then checked visually, and yes this old technology razor placed the blade enevenly as I expected. I've loosen the top cap, tightened again and all set. I lathered up with Edwin&Jagger Sandalwood soap.
There comes the weird part. I've set the razor to dial 1.5, wow it hurt again, then I went ahaed and I turned the bottom dial to zero, as owners know the triangle carved plate sit on the very bottom plate of the razor, no gaps in between at all. I wasn't sure if razor would work this way, and guess what, it worked like a charm, I can confidently say just one pass with some corrections here and there turned not only my cheeks but also chin, below the chin, neck areas ta baby bottom. I just can't believe that. I've tried another pass in a small area on my left cheek, no change. It shave purrfectly in the first and only pass.
No cuts, no nicks, no hurts, no burns, nothing at all.
Not even a sensitivity on the tip of my chin as it used to happened with Gilllette Pro-Glide.
Now wondering if this is the Feather blade's magic or not, I will try another brand razor in coupla days and let you know.
I am so happy folks and thanks for reading this , I can answer if you have any questions, suggestions, additional info please say it..
Best wishes to all.Last edited by cbaytan; 10-03-2016 at 04:55 PM. Reason: typo

Thanked: 3225Glad to hear it is all starting to work out for you. Feather blades have a reputation of being extremely sharp so if you can shave with them others should be no problem at all.

I can't imagine any softer shave with the Feather blades below, but I am sure there are beyond my imagination, better ones out there, if you have any suggestion please let me know except Merkurs came with the razor.

I use only straight razors now, but have had a good few years (and razors) shaving with DEs. I found that Feather blades were sharp but not always smooth I often ended up ditching them after the first shave. I eventually found Personna blades to be the smoothest shave for me. That said and you will hear this often on here, your mileage may vary.
Best of luck and enjoy.Fact: Opinions are not the same as facts... Well, that's my opinion anyway

Thanked: 3225I doubt you will find any sharper but there may be some almost as sharp and a bit smoother. The usual complaint with Feather blades is that they are a bit harsh on the face.
See if you can find an online vendor who sells blade sample packs. That way you can try a number of different blades to see if any are better for you. Like most things in shaving you will find people who really like a certain blade and others who don't. You really just have try different blades to see which work best for you not someone else.

And try some other blades.. Astra, Polsilver or Personna are all less harsh than Feather and may allow you get get a closer shave at a different setting without the discomfort.
