Thread: Gillette Adjustable razor 1988

Has anyone ever come across one of these? I believe that this is the last year that Gillette made the butterfly open / adjustable razor.

The latest one I have in my razor drawer is a H-4 denoting 1987 4th Quarter razor.

My long handle black diamond knurled razor has date code H 4 in the top indicating it was near to the last of the DE razors made in U.S.A. code four indicates Oct, Nov, Dec , anytime in those months. Works great like all the other adjustable DE Gillette razors I have, except for the gold one, and it has issues.

I have a couple of 1959 Fat Boy Adjustable DE's, my favorites when I shave with a DE, both work like new and in very good condition. This past Christmas I gave my oldest grandson a 1960 Fat Boy Adjustable. Man, those Fat Boys are sturdy and very well made, manufactured when Made In USA meant quality, something that would last a coupe of life times!

Well.... a bit embarrassed as I was looking through the razor drawer just a bit ago and found a black diamond knurled handled TTO and looked inside and it was an I -2 Second quarter of 1988. So I guess "I" have seen the elusive last adjustable and probably shaved with it too !!

My memory ain't what it used to be. Well, that being revealed, I guess tonight's shave will be with it... No wait, I had sceduled a shave with my Feather SS and the Pro Guard blade.... maybe finish with it.

I have a couple of Fatboys as well. One is pristine and just sits in the drawer, but the other one has slight etching on the handle and that is the one I have shaved with many a time. Great shaves every time. I even have 2 of the razors (not adjustable) from 1953, the year and quarter I was born, and the one that is new sits on the shelf in a display, but the other one I have shaved with and it's just as good as it was back in 1953.

That I-2 would be one to hang on to as it being the last year for the adjustable, nice find!

I also have a New Open Comb from the '30s that is also an excellent shaver, very aggressive, call it the 'Brush Buster'. Got a 1957 Red Tip that is also a mighty fine shaver. Bought a 1973 Trac II new in 1974 that I shaved with for 35+ years, still have it. Although I do own a Schick injector made between 1946-1955 that isn't a bad shaver I do prefer Gillette razors.

I'll have to post some pics of my Gillettes some day. I need to dispose of them since no-one in my family collects. I have some nice early pesentation sets, a few barberpole, Presidents, Senator, and English versions (Aristocrat & Milord). I belive I have about 20 sets. Love them, but I'm SR only for the last 20 yrs.

I do keep an E1 Fatboy by the sink for touchups.

An I - 4 in very good shape would be one to add to the mix, that is for sure. Last year, and last quarter. You cannot tell what exact month it was made since there were no serial numbers on these.

I, too, have a Schick injector and blades are still plentiful for it. Even found some hanging in the local drug store. It's the adjustable, but I'm really not sure how the numbers are to work. Seriously.
