My son's first DE shave
I've been gently suggesting DE/straight to him for a while and usually got the "sure whatever" response (he's 17 so...). With school being basically shut down he's been letting the "beard" grow.
Last night I was teasing him about the fuzzy lip. He told me he had just been too lazy to take care of it. I told him to take my spare Gillette Super Speed and throw a Silver Blue in it and give it a try. I told him how to find the right angle a to use really light pressure to start. I got the usual non-committal response.
I came home tonight and noticed the fuzz was gone...did you use the DE???..."Yea, it was actually kinda nice and really easy to find the angle"
He got one small nick from a bump on his chin, but seems to have liked the shave.
Next up, brushes and straightsO'Toole's commentary on Murphy's Law: Murphy was an optimist.

I recently gave my oldest grandson (23 years old) a Gillette Fat Boy with a pack of blades, a brush, a puck of soap and turned him a shaving bowl out of Cherry Burl.........he still has the fuzz on his face.

Thanked: 104My son has been a DE shaver since 17. I got a Super Speed at an antique store and prettied it up for him. He is 18 now and is still a bit scared of the Straight razor. I am ok with that, because tbh I am afraid of DEs.
(How I got him to use the DE was by asking if he really wanted to shave with the same plastic thing that women use to shave their legs.)

Thanked: 17I've never tried a DE. My dad used one up until my teenage years. I started with straights a couple of years ago. I like them, even though I've had the occasional "incident." But I find the DE razors intimidating. Not to mention that they would take away from any straight razor money I can scratch up.

Thanked: 292Congratulations in getting your son started early. He can get a lifetime of great shaves. When I started shaving 55 years ago, the choices I had were far more limited than we have today.
I have one daughter and one granddaughter, so I have not had the joy of teaching someone to shave. My son-in-law uses an electric shaver, but I hope I can convert him to wet shaving one day. If that does not work, my last hope will be that my granddaughter marries someone who can become the heir of my collection of razors, hones, strops, DE razors, blades, soaps, etc. I hope I live long enough to see that happen.
