    Default What models?

Looking to get a DE to use when in a hurry, traveling, or when the straight isn't up to par.

I have no experience with DE so I'm wondering what models are decent.

I'm awesome at finding stuff on ebay cheap but I don't even know what models to search for!

Some Merkurs and Gillettes have caught my eye, but what models should I be looking for?

I recently got a 1963 Gillette Super Speed adjustable off of eBay and I am very pleased with it so far.

I like the Merkur slant with a Feather blade. I am not sure if it is an ideal razor to begin DE shaving with but it is a darn good design. I prefer the long handled 39C but the original standard 37C is fine too. Most any of the Gillette Super Speeds are highly recommended too. I personally don't care for adjustable razors but many wet shavers favor them. Whatever you get take it slow with no pressure. Let the weight of the razor do the work. Being a straight razor shaver I imagine it won't be much of a problem to switch to DEs once in a while. I haven't had the need in months and have no desire to go back to them.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Hi there,

Let me include a link from another shaving forum (TSD) that may help in making a decision. There's new and vintage razors to choose from, and they all have their own charms. You can maybe get an idea of what each type shaves like, and take it from there.

I'd recommend buying from a forum member, rather than ebay. First, you know who you're buying from and understand he's been there for a while. Second, even the best intentioned ebay seller can sell a problem razor without knowing it. Odds are they'd never try out the thing or even know what to look for problem wise. So yeah, when you're ready to buy, maybe ask here before trying ebay.

    Hope that helps a bit,
    Martin

Oh....one other thing. You're gonna need blades.......hehe. I'm chuckling cause that's a whole other deal. You can make it easy on yourself and get blades at Wal mart or Walgreens, or send away for some. If you look at that site, check out the blade reviews and maybe order 2-3 different packs from the store. Cheaper than ordering a blade sampler package, and you can start with something like a Derby or Crystal (Israeli Personna). Those are both very popular with many members and are good ones to use as reference points. I'll tell you that blades are NOT all the same........that's for sure.

    Hi there,

Please take this in the 'gentle humor' manner it's intended. There ain't no such thing......heh. I believe you may have a 'slim', with an 'I' date to it. Superspeeds aren't adjustable as far as I know.

If you DO have that slim model, it's one of the more popular types among gillette fans.........that's a fact. Those and the fatboys are about equally split for favorite adjustable.

Once again, I apologize for the correction. i just didn't want others reading this to get confused. If I'm incorrect as to the razor you have, please don't hesitate to mention it.

I have a SS, and slim adjustable, and a gillette tech. i like them all, and they all shave. as de layne said, there are a differences in the blade. but to me, the biggest learning curve is in the technique. like str8s, better technique = better shaves.

+1 on buying from a forum member. you will get a better razor with better support from the individual selling it to you. TSD is a great site with great members.

    good luck.

I stand corrected. And I don't mind being so.
