Thanked: 2DE storage
I was just give a Hoffritz Slant recently. The previous owner left behind all sorts of stuff with his house-mates when he moved out. It was supposed to be new when the previous owner got it, but if so, he really did not maintain it well. There was still a blade that was gunky when it was given to me. The head has the beginning of pitting on the edge and underside where the chrome is just starting to lift, presumably due to corrosion underneath. I guess if it is cleaned up it may be shave worth.
I've read other posts about cleaning and polishing DE's. My main concern is how to store it after each use. I've seen on eBay, many 3 piece DE's have cases for which it is needed to disassemble the razor to fit it in. Is it advisable to do that same after use? How often do you normally clean your DE and what is your procedure?

Thanked: 278I think standard procedure is to run razor under hot water after shaving then shake it out and leave in open air to dry. When you change the blade give it a thorough clean.
But I wiped my DE clean after each shave.
It might be a good idea to be more conscientious on a razor that has already shown signs of pitting.
I stopped using the DE fairly quickly in favour of a straight, so I'm no expert.

For storage, the only thing you really need is to find a spot where it will not be subjected to too much moisture and where it will not have a chance of getting dinged with anything. A shelf, old cigar box, jewelry box, etc will all work fine. Boxes and cases are nice if you don't want to spend the time dusting and polishing ..... but, for me, that is part of the fun.
The upside with the DE's is that the ugliest ones that are missing all the plating and full of pitting do not have anything to do with how it shaves. As long as the blade fits snug, secure, and properly in the head you can shave with it.
After I use one of my DE's I rinse it under warm water and shake it dry. Every once in a while I will use a polishing cloth (with no polishing compound) and give it a once over to clean off any soap scum / clouding.
Cheers,
Rick

i was told that after a good thorough cleaning it is a good idea to cover them in mineral oil for a night and then wipe off the excess the next time you use it. my guess is that this gets a film of oil in those little crevices where soap scum and dirt tend to collect and prevents things from sticking. i don't think it is something you have to do all that often though.
