Default Ok slant + feather blade = awesomeness!

a fellow member loaned me a slant and a few blades, I jumped in the deep end and put the feather blade in. Awesome shave no nicks no razor burn! I may be a convert, hate to say it but was able to get a closer shave than my straight. Thanks!

Feather blades are the best DE blades out there. I Think a lot of new guys think they're going to rack up their faces because everyone mentions how sharp they are. The truth is, due to the higher sharpness, harsh burn and weepers is less an occurrence then say if you used crap like a Merkur blade.

Try an old Gillette like the NEW improved or the old types (they're open combs). They are even better than the Slant, IMO.

I have a feather straight and yes they are awesome sharp! As long as you give them respect life is good! I really think I found a winning combo for a great shave. Thanks again for the loaner!!

There are parts of my face a DE does better than a straight, most notably the neck because I can't get a great angle with a straight. Feather blades are pretty wicked, but they do indeed produce less weepers than a Merkur blade. Derby blades are a favorite in the stable as well.

    Congrats on the shave!

Slants give the closest shave in the DE world hands down Glad your sensitive face agreed with the slant.

sadly the only razor that a feather blade has worked for me is in a gillette fatboy.

Now all you need is to try a SE to complete your repertoire of classical razors ^_^

......by the way was the slant a 47c or 49c version?

Just ordered a Merkur 39C Slant. I've been shaving with a STR8 for about 6 months. I think the STR8 gives me good shave but not consistently. Probably technique.

Currently I have a Merkur Futur which gives BBS smooth shaves every time.
I wish I could say that about my STR8's.

SOmetimes I do great sometimes I hack myself up. When it's good it's great but when I walk into work and everyone says what happened to you it's pretty bad.

I started with Derby blades in my slant and progressed to feather.Derbys are imho, gentler for a first use.I also find it much easier to get a close shave with a slant than a straight but I think it's because the slant is easier to manoeuvre in places like the neck.
One thing I've realised is that I didn't follow the basic rules of shaving eg. first pass should be with the grain.I thought I was doing so but have found that I wasn't going completely wtg but slightly off to the side and often xtg.Since I have been paying particular attention to shaving exactly wtg (that and stretching),I have solved almost all of my annoying "rough bits left" problem and now get a far closer shave even with the first pass! I'm going to try it out with my straights now.
One final thought occurs. The DE is a brilliant learning tool as well as for experienced shavers so we should never think of it as somehow inferior to sthaight razors. It's simply a different method of shaving init?
